The African Reformation

How do we best maximize our efforts in a huge continent like Africa where 70-80% of the people still live dispersed in remote villages and yet the vast majority of church resources and training opportunities are in the cities?

There are two ways to go about it. We can either depend on the traditional model of missions whereby we put foreigners in the field who need to learn the language and understand the culture to make an impact on these villages with the gospel. Or we can strengthen the local churches that do exist and plant more churches and fill their pulpits with trained and qualified national pastors who in turn become the best missionaries in their own area and beyond.

This is by far the most effective way to do missions, because nationals are already part of the culture, and are fluent in the language and lifestyle. The church in Africa needs what is difficult to obtain namely good theological education so that they can do the work of the ministry more effectively. Rural Africa suffers under grinding poverty, deadly diseases and a lack of sufficient infrastructure and as a result the unemployment rate is 40-50% in most areas. Most cannot afford the training that is so desperately needed, unless we provide it for them.

God has been gracious and has blessed us. Since 1989 our ministry has played a key role in the planting of over 200 churches. Over 70 pastors have been trained so far. Our desire is to take in 24 new students each year in our four year programme.

There is so much more to do and there are many more who desire to be trained, but we cannot do it alone. We are just one small church with this particular vision, but without partners the task of accelerating the spreading of the gospel is hampered. The African Reformation is underway.

The good news is that there is still room for many partners to help propel this reformation into the 21st century.

Will you join us in claiming these innumerable crowns of glory in the growing African Reformation?
