Africa in Perspective

When a group of village pastors from South Africa went to Mozambique on a missions trip, they were confronted with an unusual situation. Their original intent was to evangelize the remote Shangaan people in a village, and each man was ready to preach his gospel sermon. When the men arrived, a young man in the village approached them and said, “I am a believer who knows that Jesus Christ came and died for my sins. But, I have some questions on how to live a Christian life, and other more specific questions relative to marriage and parenting. The problem is that everyone who comes here tells us the same thing—Jesus died for our sins and we need to repent and accept Him as LORD. After they tell us this, they immediately leave, and we have no one to answer our questions. Then, the next people come and say the same thing. Can you guys help us?”

Needless to say, the village pastors had to regroup! They changed their gospel sermons into sermons on what the Bible says about Christian living, and were able to make the trip quite profitable for the people.

Africa is a greatly misunderstood continent, and it might be surprising to hear that most of sub-Saharan Africa has heard the gospel. This region has been the “promised land” for American and European missionaries for the past several centuries. Since the arrival of David Livingstone, Robert Moffat and others, there has been a proliferation of Protestant theology as well as Roman Catholic influence throughout the continent. Even here in South Africa, many westernized people still believe that the rural Africans who live in villages and townships still haven't heard the basic gospel even though current statistics show that 80% of all South Africans call themselves “Christian.”

Missions in Africa is challenging, because what is happening on the field is far from the supporting churches “back home” where everyone still thinks that all missionaries are pioneers who preach the gospel to “the guy who has never heard.” Unfortunately in Africa, we are flooded with this kind of thinking. What Africa really needs is local pastors who are trained and equipped to effectively preach and teach God's word to their people. Africa needs pastors who speak the same language as the people, and belong to the same race and tribe as the people so that they can understand the cultural issues and have God's answers for their specific questions.

Christ Seminary is a ministry of Christ Baptist Church in Polokwane, South Africa, and is dedicated to the training and equipping of pastors in sub-Saharan Africa. We provide four years of Theology, Biblical Languages, Biblical Counseling, and Preaching so that trained men will be in the pulpits every Sunday. Currently, there are 68 students in training with more coming every year. This means 68 pastors of 68 churches throughout Southern Africa, and each year 15-20 new pastors join the seminary.

From a ministry standpoint, with limited resources, what should your church be looking for? One word—leverage. When you partner with Christ Seminary, you are supporting a continuous flow of African pastors to effectively preach to African people for changed lives. Missionaries don't reach Africans. Africans reach Africans. So goes the pulpit, so goes Africa. God has worked in the past in Africa through missionaries. Now He is working through pastors! Now is the time to leverage the 5 loaves and 2 fish of your missions resources and multiply the feeding of God's truth to thousands! Leverage!
