Overview of Christ Baptist Church Seminary

From the start, Christ Seminary has been determined not to be another independent academic institution where men come to merely get knowledge and qualifications. Rather than existing to supply pastors for churches, Christ Seminary exists to serve and assist local churches in giving further training to men whom they have already identified as faithful and capable. We believe this can best be done through an in-service, church-based program which combines rigorous studies with local church involvement.

We aim for students at Christ Seminary to get the best of both worlds: solid theological training in the Scriptures, united with hands-on practical opportunities in their current ministry.

Our modular program requires students to attend lectures for a ten day session each month, during which they receive one full month's worth of lectures. After each session, they return to their homes and churches to complete assignments and to serve their churches. In between sessions, Christ Seminary lecturers visit students and give input into their ministries, while also seeking to partner with good churches and pastors who can assist us in supervising and mentoring each student. Each lecturer is also involved in pastoral ministry so that his teaching is seasoned by his own experience.

Furthermore, Christ Seminary realizes our students' crucial need for living models of biblical ministry, so we seek to provide this in every way possible (at Christ Baptist Church; in lecturers' own lives and homes; in assisting area churches to become biblical models; etc.).

As Jesus and Paul so clearly demonstrated in their own training methods, a student is only well-trained when he demonstrates mastery of both the biblical content and the godly character and ministry skills necessary. Only this kind of integrated, thorough training will produce the shepherds so badly needed in our churches. Only then will the church in Africa become strong and stable, grounded on rock-solid biblical truth.

Christ Seminary was started in 1997 with eight students who enrolled for the Diploma of Theology. From its small beginnings in 1997, the Seminary has steadily grown over the years to 68 students in 2010. The need in Africa was felt so deeply that the student body is currently made up of men speaking 17 languages and coming from 14 African countries, representing  more than 20% of the continent, as well as from the USA and Germany.

We are here to serve God's Church in Africa as is reflected in our mission statement:

"We strive to exalt Christ and strengthen His Church
in Southern Africa through the training up
of skilful shepherds who are able to study,
live out and communicate God's Word.
"

- Ezra 7:10; 2Tim.2:2; 3:15; 4:2.
